The Madibaz women’s volleyball team produced a thrilling fightback to edge Port Elizabeth College for the Mayoral Cup title in Uitenhage at the weekend.
Trailing 14-9 in the fifth and final set, Madibaz refused to give in and pulled the match out of the fire by hitting back to win the set 16-14 and the match 3-2.
Madibaz volleyball manager Bernard Petersen said the match showcased the talent on display as the sides battled it out for cup glory.
“Both teams produced some exceptional volleyball, but it was the fighting spirit of the Madibaz ladies saw them eventually come through,” he said.
The Madibaz men’s team produced some good performances, but eventually lost in the semifinals, going down to Volkswagen 2-0.
Petersen said the teamwork among the women had been the key to their success.
“Volleyball is a team sport and everyone forms part of a puzzle to ensure the end goal. With this said, however, we must mention our outside hitter, Friederike Hobein, who displayed an excellent level of volleyball.”
Petersen said the tournament wrapped up the Nelson Mandela Bay Volleyball Association programme for the year.
