One of South Africa’s oldest institutions, the University of Pretoria was established in 1930 and offers courses in both English and Afrikaans across its seven campuses.
In 2011 the Financial Times ranked UP’s business school – the Gordon Institute of Business Sciences – as the top MBA in Africa.
UP is home to South Africa’s only veterinary faculty – the second oldest in Africa, located at the university’s Onderstepoort Campus. Final year students train at the Onderstepoort Veterinary Academic Hospital, an internationally recognised state of the art facility.
Aside from business and veterinary sciences, UP offers over 1 800 programmes in the faculties of economic and management sciences, education, engineering, built environment and information technology, health sciences, humanities, law, natural and agricultural sciences, and theology.
UP is also the university with the highest research output in South Africa, a title they have maintained since 1996. Many of UP’s researchers are NRF-rated, awarding the institution international status in the field of research.
The university boasts a number of notable alumni, such as Springbok Victor Matfield and writers Chris Barnard and Antjie Krog.
The main campus is located on the corner of Lynnwood Road and Roper Street, Hatfield, Pretoria.
