The Madibaz cricket team are ready for a shot at national recognition when they compete in the CSA Momentum National Club Championship in Pretoria, starting this weekend.
A total of six clubs will be vying for the top honours, playing five matches from Saturday to Wednesday. The team with the most points in the round-robin tournament will be crowned champions.
The Nelson Mandela University outfit qualified for the national event by defeating Fort Hare University in the Eastern Cape play-off in Port Elizabeth on Saturday.
Skipper David Masterson said they showed good determination in the play-off and he wants the players to emulate that in Pretoria.
“It was important for our club to win that match and it was very good to see the right approach from all the players,” he said.
While they will face different conditions in the Highveld atmosphere, he felt they were ready for the challenge.
“I still believe that no matter where you play the team who plays better cricket on the day will win. So that is all we’ll have to do.
“Our team culture is a massive strength and the guys are willing to play for the team and each other.”
