The Madibaz women’s football team have targeted a spot in the top eight when they compete in the University Sport South Africa tournament in Port Elizabeth next week.
Starting on Monday, the Nelson Mandela University outfit will be looking to improve on their 13th position of last year, having a more experienced squad this time.
Coach Nomaxabiso Manto said the 2017 team had only one player with previous USSA experience, but they now had a good sense of continuity for next week’s event.
“We are determined to finish in the top eight which will help us to secure a place in the Varsity Football competition,” she said.
Manto said they were aiming to use their knowledge of the home conditions to their advantage after extensive preparations for the week.
“The players have been training very hard and everyone has been putting in an extra effort for this tournament.”
Their mental preparation for the tournament would be the key to their hopes of finishing in the top eight, said Manto.
“We need to make sure we have the right attitude going into the week and that we stay positive at all times.
“We have the quality that is required to do well but we just need to believe in ourselves.”
The tournament will come to a conclusion when the final matches are played on July 6.
