UJ outplayed their Bloem opponents in the corresponding fixture last year and soccer manager Joel Kgokong said they wanted a repeat of that effort to spark their charge for the title.
He said their preparations were on track and after recovering from a testing University Sport South Africa tournament, the squad members were ready for the opener.
“We will be looking for a strong start to the tournament as we strive to avoid the pain we suffered a year ago.”
Last year, UJ were shaded 1-0 in the final by Tshwane University of Technology and Kgokong said they wanted to go all the way this time.
“We don’t want a repeat of that final,” said Kgokong. “From the technical staff to the players, they don’t want to go through that again.
“We have placed a big focus on again reaching the play-offs, but we know we will have to prove ourselves in the seven matches during the league phase.”
Kgokong said it would be important to finish high on the log to try to secure home support for the play-offs.
“You could see last year when TUT hosted the final how their supporters came through for them. We want to make sure we have that sort of backing from our fans this year.”
