The University of Johannesburg team will be out to prove a point when the inaugural Varsity Basketball tournament starts at Wits in Johannesburg on Friday.
Being played at the Wits University Sports Hall over successive weekends, the tournament will climax with the final on October 14.
UJ basketball manager Anton van Rooyen said they were looking forward to demonstrating their ability on this national stage.
“We have been waiting so long for this to happen. Now that it is finally here we are excited about the exposure the players will receive,” he exposure.
“For many years, the University Sport South Africa was the highlight, but this is another big event for the top eight teams.”
Van Rooyen said their priority would be to finish in, at least, the top four.
“We have always been in the top three sides in university tournaments and we want to push on from there.
Basing their strength on their fitness, speed and power, Van Rooyen said they would be focusing on a concerted team effort to make an impression.
“All our players are important to our cause and we believe that even if the team does change slightly, the intensity will stay the same.”
The teams to battle it out for the Varsity Basketball trophy will be University of KwaZulu-Natal, UJ, University of Cape Town, Nelson Mandela University, Tshwane University of Technology, University of Pretoria, VUT and Wits.
The tournament will feature an innovative power play, where, for two minutes, every point scored will count double.
